Ziauddin Yousafzai, the Pakistani education activist and father of Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, tells the story of seeing a portrait of Malalai of Maiwand, a young Afghan national folk hero who died on the battlefield, that inspired him to name his daughter, Malala.
